Rick Santorum is a True Hero in my Eyes

By Brian Hughes

Today is a dark day for Rick Santorum supporters. As we all waited with anticipation to hear of Bella’s prognosis, we got news we all regretted hearing. Rick Santorum has suspended his campaign for President in 2012.  I had a gut feeling about this when I first heard of Bella’s admission into the hospital.

I want to commend Rick for not allowing Bella to be the scapegoat but rather using the Texas delegate rule to be it instead (A Message from Rick and Karen: Thank You). This is exactly why I support Rick in the first place. Any man who chooses to be a hero for his daughter over anyone else or anything else is my hero.  I hope and pray for the health of Bella in this dark time for her and her family.

As we all complain about who can we support now and what is going to happen to us; let us think about poor Bella at home with pneumonia and how serious this could be. The fact that Rick and Karen left Bella’s side to talk to us about their decision was very honorable. Being a father of 5 and my youngest having Spina Bifida it proves to me that Rick really does care about our Nation and his family.

Bella is in our prayers and I hope the best for Rick and his family.

      • Hi Brian,

Nice write up, and you already know (I hope) that I have a lot of respect for your opinions and positions, and even more for you as a man, even though we may not always 100% agree on all issues.

Any parent would understand Senator Santorum’s decision to be with his child, and it is indeed honorable. Bravo, Senator Santorum for shooing away the political machine in honor of your family.

Again, I certainly do not agree with Senator Santorum 100% of the time, to say the least, and I personally do not believe he was the best choice to govern the nation, but I do respect him for his character and willingness to embrace and stand by his beliefs.

That said, and understanding the political climate in which this primary season has existed, along with the nature of the American political machine, I cannot help but think Senator Santorum’s handlers and advisors also saw Bella’s situation as an opportunity for him to bow out gracefully and honorably, as opposed to having to finally acknowledge (as fellow Republican candidate Congressman Newt Gingrich recently did) that former Governor Romney was, and is, clearly going to win the Republican nomination. (To the great detriment of the Republican Party’s chances to defeat President Barack Obama, I might add).

It is unfathomable for men of character to believe that political pundits and king-makers would use a child’s illness for political gain, but in the world in which we live, we know it is at least possible.

Our entire political process and two-party system has become so convoluted and poorly centered that no candidate can really “serve the people” anymore – they are all to behooven to special interests, whether that be a political action committee, a secular or religious extremist group, or their own party’s forced platform and party-line.

What the nation desperately needs now is men of compromise, healing and resolution, and neither Senator Santorum, Congressman Gingrich or former Governor Romney fits that bill. Congressman Ron Paul is probably the closest thing to what we need and he will not win because he does not play the “political game”.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to little Bella Santorum.

  1. I feel bad that his daughter is ill and sincerely hope that she recovers and lives a happy healthy life. That said, good riddance to Santorum. I don’t know when the concept of Freedom became so despised in this country. First it was the Libs and now it’s the Cons. There’s a difference between having conservative values and wanting to change America so that it looks like a western version of Iran. American freedom really dodged a bullet with the dropping out of Ayatollah Santorum!

    • TO BANJO…. PROV. 17:28 28 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent,
and discerning if they hold their tongues. ….God said it…. then man added open your mouth and remove all doubt

    • Well, Banjo, you really didn’t get it, did you. Rick Santorum has been the best friend of American Freedom, but you must of been too busy playing your instrument to have figured out what it was he was saying. At least you have enough sense to hope his daughter well, but you’ve failed to understand that it
was for her benefit and for the benefit of all children, born, pre-born, well, ill,
and all inbetween that he decided to run for the presidential office. The best
choice for president just canceled, and now we must scramble to support someone who is much less an ideal candidate, but still better than obama. God help this nation.

  2. Yes, he is. Though I am sad that I am out of a “job” today, I completely respect him and his decision. I know it was not an easy decision to make. Glad to ‘meet’ you on this campaign trail!

  3. God has accomplished much thru Santorum, his family & his run for president. I can see some, and I’m sure there is much more of which I am unaware. The faith and comraderie of his volunteers and campaign is remarkable! God is still in control, and while my heart is heavy today – both for Bella and Rick dropping out, I still rejoice that our God is Alive and calling the shots!

  4. So sorry to hear Rick has suspended his campaign. I don’t understand why he wasn’t number one, but I know he will do the right thing and support our republican candidate!!!

  5. I completely agree. Rick Santorum expresses the characteristics of a true Catholic leader. He put his first responsibility – FAMILY – before everything else. His decision is selfless and heroic act of love…

  6. I honor and respect the fact that he attended to his ill young daughter because that at least shows he cares enough for his family to suspend his campaign for her sake, as would any other loving father do were their child in a similar circumstance.

Politically speaking, Rick Santorum does not have a voting record to prove that he would be a conservative president as many of his supporters, as well as others, are led to believe. I am a Kenyan citizen, born and raised. I reside in the U.S. but i have a passion for politics because i am a social activist. Since i can’t vote in this country, I am not biased on a particular party so please don’t hate for the sake of hating…please hear me out.

Republican or democrat, i hear the same cry from the people. Everyone wants small government and more freedom. However, it’s rather confusing and challenging to me that the very people who would love to see a conservative president continue to follow, support and ultimately vote for non-conservative candidates for president.

With this much said, consider the following: Santorum voted to raise the national debt ceiling 5 times. He voted for planned parenthood, then later on in the debate, he said he was against it and would repeal it if he were president after being challenged about his beliefs on abortion. Furthermore, he voted to double the size of the department of education by voting on planned parenthood. Also, he voted on the biggest Government entitelement expansion since the 60’s (727 Billion dollars btw..) If that’s not enough, he voted to send billions of Americans’ tax dollars overseas to dictators in North Korea and Egypt. He also funded planned parenthood with a few million dollars. (Ironic that he then said he was against it). With this kind of voting record, it’s easy to come out and “be” a fiscal conservative on stage and talk like you are one but a man is judged by his fruits isn’t he?

I think i have given enough evidence to show you that Rick Santorum, although a man who cares about his daughter and family, is a counterfeit conservative when it comes to politics. To top it off, many polls were showing that he was on a clear path to losing in his home state of Pennsylvania preceding the termination of his campaign which is sad for any candidate..

Romney is also not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination. There’s much i can say about his “flip flop” history but i will just show a couple proofs. He provided the blueprint for Obamacare; he tells the public that he is consistent yet on one occasion he says that he thinks that abortion is safe and should be legalized yet in a debate he completely polarized his view by saying, “i think everyone understands that i am very pro-life” How’s that possible? And finally, Romney wants another economic “stimulus” just like Obama’s stimulus package which didn’t stimulate the economy one bit. Another reason why Romney wouldn’t be conservative is because he is funded by the same people that funded, Clinton, Bush, and now Obama. (JP Morgan Chase, Goldmann Sachs, Rockefeller Foundation…aka the elite lobbyists.)

If Gingrich can’t hold up a wife and cherish her as long as she lives, let alone a family, how could he be even entrusted with the oath of office? Beyond the family aspect, politically, he is also a hypocrite. Just like Santorum, he is a fake conservative and just like Romney, has been funded by the lobbyists. His foreign policy is very non-conservative as he seeks for the policing of other nations. He says he supports the troops, as do all the candidates, and being one who trained the troops, it’s intriguing to see that the troops do not fund him well at all.

Ron Paul is left. He’s the only one i have found consistent. Any argument raised against him has been answered in the most respectful and logical way possible. He is a man who has fruit to show for his claims. He has never voted to raise taxes. Never voted for going to fight undeclared wars. Never voted for planned parenthood. Never voted for the department of education. Never voted for healthcare. Never voted to take away the liberties of the people that were given by none other than God himself. He is, in one word, consistent.

I have friends who say they support the troops yet they think Ron Paul’s foreign policy is a joke. Irony couldn’t get any better than this. Let me explain. Ron Paul gets more money from active duty military men than ALL the other candidates Combined. That means that if you support the troops, you ultimately support Ron Paul by default. By the way, his foreign policy lines up with the Constitution of the U.S., as does all his other policies. Check em out!

I said i wasn’t biased and i have shown you proof for all the candidates. If i was American, i would vote for Ron Paul simply because he is the ONLY candidate who offfers real change apart from the status quo that lines up parallel to the Constitution. His voting record shows it; he’s not funded by lobbyists, the military respects and funds him, and above all, he’s a man of true character. He’s been married almost 54 years happily to his wife and has personally delivered over 4000 babies as a doctor in profession.

I kindly ask that everyone educate themselves before saying anything about any candidate and especially before voting because these politicians are employed by your vote. Whatever decision they make not only affects you as an American, but me as well as a legal resident here for the time being. Please choose your candidate wisely. 🙂

  7. Ronald Reagan’s ex-wife said the same types of things about him too. There’s actually a lot behind that issue that hasn’t been discussed (like Newt was separated from his ex for 6 yrs when he started dating Callista and then his ex suddenly wanted to patch things up even though she left him and took everything from their home….on his birthday) Regardless, Obama is not going to bring up his opponent’s personal life because then his is fair game. He definitely doesn’t want Larry Sinclair parading in front of the cameras again. I’m gonna say one thing about Ron Paul. The post above is a repeat of what EVERY Ron Paul supporter says and not news to anyone. He stood there and watched an illegal abortion while he was in his residency and did NOTHING to save that baby….just listened to it cry from inside the trash can the doctor place it in. If he was so pro-military and they were his biggest fans, he would’ve been in Va Beach/Norfolk campaigning or at least run a tv ad but he did not. Ok, so maybe that was more than one thing. I’m very glad that I had the chance to get to know the Santorum family a little better over these past few months. I really hope that Rick continues to be a strong voice for the laity of the Catholic Church in its fight against the Obamacare mandate. A Cardinal from the Vatican weighed in on that issue last night and it isn’t going away any time soon!! As a Catholic, I also appreciate that he has shown the country a contrast to the only Catholic president we have had, John F Kennedy. Now that abortion has turned into a partisan issue, a true Catholic cannot be a democrat. I hate that it has been something that has broken down among party lines, but that’s the truth. I was also so incredibly impressed with Mrs Santorum and everything that she has accomplished in her life, both professional and personal. I plan on buying her book once the prices drop a bit (it’s been selling for over $100 on Amazon!!) and the fact that Mother Theresa chose to write the forward of her book, speaks volumes in itself!! I don’t see the Santorum family retreating to a life of anonymity anytime soon either. The pro-life movement is at a pivotal point where we are changing hearts and minds and also achieving legislative victories so they came into the spotlight at just the right time, in my opinion. We needed a political voice that would stand strong on pro-life and pro-family issues at this time in our country. I’ve said throughout the primaries that I was a dual supporter because I would be more than happy to vote for Rick or Newt. My one concern about Rick was that after seeing Ron Paul supporters begin to personally attack his wife, it honestly made me cry for her. I was worried about what his family would be subjected to in the general election and didn’t want them to have to be put through the vicious attacks that would be coming from Obama. That is why I have been leaning a bit towards Newt. Let’s face it, Newt can dish it out as well as he can take it and is used to be the target of the left and the GOP establishment. I just hope that people take a look at what his solutions are for the country because there are a lot of similarities between him and Rick. We need a conservative to beat Obama and Romney won’t be able to cut it!!

  8. Many of us are still planning on voting for Rick in our upcoming primaries. Please spread the word. Rick has not released his delegates nor has he conceded. He has simply suspended his campaign. He says because of the Texas delegate situation and money. Many of us believe it is so that he can spend time with Bella. So, we will campaign for him so that he can take care of Bella. Please, if your primary is upcoming, vote for Rick. Make a statement. He can still get back in if he wants to. And, if he sees enough support even when he is not taking the time to campaign, maybe he will. Plus, if Rick gets enough votes even when he is not campaigning, it is a statement to the establishment!! Some people think that doing this will only hurt the Republican party because Mitt won’t get enough delegates if we do this. True that he might not get enough delegates. False that it will hurt the party. The worst thing that will happen is that it will cause us to go into a brokered convention. That’s not a bad thing, but a good thing! Vote for Rick!!!
